Here's three young showa. Out of these three which do you think would be the best choice and why?

It's not easy to tell certian qualities from pictures.. really this comes down to pattern and what you may see in the future for each.
So share your thoughts...

Just for fun, have at it!

*is there an echo in here? *

I like #3, for no particular reason but I like it.

I like #2. Most likely its just my odd taste, but that one shows character in the pattern........

Quess I should probably add that I see what looks like promising sumi (black?) yet to come In all, but # 2 appears to have a bit more Hi (red?) coming also?

I've not studied or read up too much of the what to look fors, so this is rather a starting point for me!

Send me all 3 and I'll get that blue bowl you suggested  . Personally I would go with #1 because of it looks like is has more of a pattern of black to come and I really like the black and white patterns on its fins. #2 for me the fins are too black and #3 looks to me like it may grow to be a koromo with the hopes that the black will come thru in the patterns that it is showing now. I like #1 the most. It looks the most promising to me. It has a lot of hi and the underlying sumi looks promising. I also like the pattern of the sumi on the pec fins.

Again, all new at this and don't know to much. I do like #1 looks like more black to come and I love the fin coloring. But then I like the look of #2 also, not bothered by the more solid black fins, adds color to the lots of colorless area near them.

Number one absolutely STINKS....all that red? Especially on the head, the black can come through it, the White NEVER will....if it didn't have any white it could have a future as a hi utsuri.. BUT STINKS AS A SHOWA....
Now the other two make my Showalovin' heart ZING....they don't show a major flaw. Both of them can be drop dead awesome especially the white one (i'd buy it if it was in my range), but the other one could be better...it all depends on what happens in the next 5 years....
Sell #1.

So the black fins are not a flaw in number 2?

No Jackie, as this little showa grows the montoguru should shrink and look more appealing being tucked tight to the base. #3 who does not have sumi in the pecs, well that would be a flaw... except from seeing other sibilings of this one I'm sure the montoguru will begin to develop over the next year or so.

I some what disagree with Luke about #1. This is a very young fish. There is white visible and I see very little underlaying sumi in those areas, as this one grows I feel the white will become more visible. I do agree about not enough white on the head to complete the traditional 3 colours saught after on a showa. Might make a nice Hi Showa. If this little guy is around next fall we'll have to post a pic to see the changes.

Over all my pick would be #3.

Jr.,
yes I would put the all black or all white pecs as a flaw....but pecs change alot....and I'll buy a young showa with ALMOST all black pecs..the white pecs were a problem for me but the other aspects make it a quality fishie.
Now, I'd go with the all black pec fish as my first choice...and it is a gamble....it gives clues that a spectacular head pattern is going to develop...
Damn brady...when's he going to start making more of those time machines?

That’s one of the best parts of this hobby we all have our opinions about the fish we like. When where you going to be sending me #1 it looks to be about 4-5" and would home nicely in our vacant aquarim until April.

This is a picture of a baby koi my 4 year old son picked out and he says its the best looking koi we have. I guess it goes to show beauty is in the eye of the beholder. He also picked out a Midorigoi Sept 03 that is awsome and fits the description of a true Midorigoi perfectly. Below is a picture of Slimer however the picture is from November 03 so it does not show it very well because it was only about 3" long when we got it. Allen Ps the second picture is 3 of the 6 originals. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ozzyrockman/CodysKoi.jpg

These are pictures from last year during and after the move to the big pond of Tancho ya I know not creative but it fits. What do you think of it, sorry about the quality of the photos, I'm still working a charitable contribution of a blue bowl  . Allen

Yes, Luke I agree Brady's Time Machine posts are the best.

Allen, Sounds like you have a big helper for around the pond. Its great when they take an interest. I have the same blue bowl as you except mine is red on the outside

That tancho looks to be a spot on "Tancho Sanke"....seriously could be come a valuable fish IF it is as it appears.

Thanks, I am hoping this little rascals is a female and its patterns stay as they are now only to show more later on in life and we have had it for almost a year now without change in pattern. The picts where taken 7/04 and the second pict turned out very poor. I had been watching this one for a little over a month at the dealer after it had arrived and much to my surprise when opening day came around they put it in the $45 tank and luckily I was second in line to select my fish. The bigger one in the cooler was one that was abandon in a little pond. Allen PS Cody our 4 year old just helped plumb it the new filter too and did a heck of a nice job.

I love showa as they change so much from fry to adult. The black/sumi to come and the end result pattern is more like a journey of hope as the koi grows. Not an easy type to pick younge but fun. I think I would like to see how #1 would turn out as I would #2,#3, but sucking it in my pick is #1.

I'll say #1, because I think the sumi that will come up will look fantastic. #2 looks the best right now. Im drawn to it alot, and think that it will also turn out to be very nice.

Again...I would pass on all three for now. #1 seems to have way too much red. #2 has way too much black in the pecs. #3 although you can see the underlying black, would like to see some in the fins and more on the head.

But again...what do I know...just what appeals or doesn't appeal to my taste.
