Here's three kohaku. Out of these three which do you think would be the best choice and why?

It's not easy to tell certian qualities from pictures.. really this comes down to pattern and what you may see in the future for each.
We're not picking for koi show GC here, personal choice is all that's required. So share your thoughts...
Just for fun, have at it!

Well although I like the 3rd one best now, I think I will chose number 2 for development.

Although I like 3's pattern, 2 has a better conformation, but number 1 has that lovely tancho and the body does look promising........ I'm no expert, again, this is probably just my strange taste in fish........

I'm going with #1 for the simple reason the tancho catches my eye quicker than the other two although its color is not as good as the others in the pictures yet give it a couple years. 8) Allen

I like #2 the best. I like the cleaner hi on him, plus I like the way that the hi doesn't come all the way down his nose. Would like to see a cleaner break before the caudal fin, it's hard to tell with the picture though.
I would pic #2 for the even pattern and red, nice shape on the head.
But #1 as having a circle does stand out in the crowd. The shoulder starts off with some weak red, it will be interesting to see which way it developes.
As for # 3 the red is too much around the head for my liking but do like the future for the back half as it could turn out to be a neat pattern when it gets bigger.

Odd man(woman) out again. Don't know much about koi's yet, but I just like the third one alot and if I'm not going to show it the odd characteristics suits me best.

Number three is the winner here.
The white on the right side of the head will "grow" and keep it from being a "bullethead"....show all of the people that discounted this koi another pic with the obvious white on the right side of the head and they will change their minds.
The other great aspect of this koi is the white invading the Hi...that will continue and make the Koi dramatic....but in reverse of what is the normal play on the pattern....on this Koi the white will be the pattern and the hi will be the background....another koi worth money... with an outside chance as a GC if it grows out nicely..... But that don't matter that koi will become a bit of art...the other two don't do a dang thing for me. especially that dot-headed blah sack of skin.

Terri got any more pics of these fish at a later date in their lives?

Quick Terri raise the price on that one, I think you have him hooked.
Was going to net some this weekend but everyone got sick around here...
No huge changes in the past few months with a little bit of growth but we'll see up close as soon as Terri feels better and I'm not at work
Luke, looking at that one today ( as much as the little buggers stop and stay still) Not so bullet head and showing more white.
We should add a few more to the thread to keep it interesting till we get some updates in the next week or so. A few more will help see how the little ones progress and how choices are making out.

yeah Ian....I'm starting to understand how patterns move around on a koi's head as it grows..."starting".
Matt McCann nailed the head pattern and body pattern on a sanke I got from him at the Blind Draw at ZNA/Ska....
The bloody little bugger looked like a three inch red and black splinter. he picked out where the white was going to invade the red...
i also have a Showa/Sanke that had a square of red around one eye...now it has a face that is half white and half black.

now where's the pic?

I dont know enought about Kohaku development, but Luke's analagy of #3 sounds good. I think it will still be a hooded kohaku.
I like #1, #2, #3 in that order. If the tancho spot went away on #1 it would probably be worthless.
I also think by looking at the fins that #1 might be female and the other two male ?

Sorry...but I don't like any of them.
#2 & 3 the red goes into their tail. Also #3 has too much red on the head.
#1 there are white spots in the red also the red is too weak near the head.
But If I had to chose out of the three, it would be #1.
But then again...what do I know!

I will pick #2 of the group.

Ok, we only got #1 and #2
Pics taken March 27th 2005
#1, not much change other than it looks fed now

I think the hi is weak on the shoulder...
#2 sorry, not a great shot - again, not much changed here.

Not much change in either of the Terri, what is the time line here. The #2 still looks skinny
I've replyed with out looking at the others coments, I think number two is the best of the theree, now and in the future, the pattern on the first fish held me for just a moment, the third perhaps has too much red around the eyes.
Now that I've made a complete @rse of myself, I will read the rest.
Ps: number twos shape is the better, I think. :???:
Hmmmm? Now that I've read the other comments and seen the other pics cant see no3 being better than two. Not knowing a great deal about the comings and goings of colour is what makes it interesting. How much more interesting it would be if I did.

Quick up-date
#3 kohaku 1st pic taken Dec04 - 2nd pic taken May05

Breaks in the hi are happening where I thought they might. It's unfortunate that the hi wraps the face as it does and the one eye is red. Other than that it will a nice kohaku - has a very good shape, uniform hi and good shiro.
luke frisbee

Actually, it is just a very good pond grade fish. The Red head is a bummer but the breaks haven't cleaned up enough for the redhead to be the fly in the ointment. The front break is not cleaning up as well as the back break. IF they do clean up then the head will still be "a bummer". :frisbee:
Show us one of yours that is better.

Plus no tailstop and there is too much red, and the white doesn't look that white...

FORGET WHAT I SAID THE FIRST TIME...... Then again if this koi does clear up and the hi slides off the left side of its face.....?
Terri
06-20-2005, 01:04 AM
Sooo... which is it Lukie  But you are right, it's a nice pond grade red/white fish :frisbee:
Ok, here's a better kohaku. Believe me the photo's do not do the hi justice. Wish it had a better tail stop but other than that ... well you tell me Luke.
1st pic Dec04 : 2nd pic May05

First; the first step has good hi...after that  the pic must suck.
Yet as to the pattern, the first step should not wrap around the koi that much, if it were to swap the "wrapping" with the steps in the middle it'd be a proper koi. Those last three(?) steps are going to look bloody awful, especially when held up against the first step's qualities. When that koi grows the last three(?) steps will look like orange rubber rafts floating on a white swimming pool.
And for an example of the "proper wrapping" look at terri's avatar. Small on the head, heavy wrap on the broad back and down the sides..AND A TAIL STOP.

We do not see the same thing(you're right, not a great pic, lighting sucks), but then I've had the advantage of having seen it up close in person(for months). Yes I agree about the wrap for "right now".... BUT the second and third(?) step will stretch as there is still more hi to come(take notice of the 1st pic to the 2nd pic), this hi is more than skin deep. My feeling is that as this very young koi grows the head pattern will not look so "large" against the rest to follow. Too bad about the tail stop...
This kohaku went to a good koi keeper so hopefully in the future I can get an update on it's development.
Remember our ginrin kohaku Luke? The pattern was totally lopsided as tosai and now looks much more balanced at 4yrs old. Different breeder to the koi pictured above but something to think about... ever changing, even if in just small ways.

You may be right. I've seen hi keep coming up...but it looks like fuzzy hi in that pic.
Terri

Not "fuzzy", emerging
Give me a week or two, I just picked up some new fish, two are pretty cool kohaku, 2yrs old, I'll post some more pics.

I like the last one but red and white fish are not my thing, they need some black to make them worth while.
