The blooms on these things are exquisit, I wonder if I could grow them. Do you keep them outside year round. I know I'd have to do them inside, I'm much colder, do you think they'd do well inside?

They are outside year round for me but I imagine with proper light you could do them indoors. People grow orchids and all kinds of other plants inside!

These are the places I went for info after my friend Doug gave me cuttings and dared me to keep them alive. I think I've done well, all are still alive, several have bloomed and others are ready to, and all need to be repoted as they are getting bigger

Charla, the only thing I am tired of is waiting for my cutting - just kidding my dear as you know! Just beautiful and the care doesn't sound so different from orchids. I've had a bit of success with orchids and Linda who's husband Steve has a thread here about their new pond is an orchid expert so I can always get her to help me.
Can you tell I'm excited about these plants. I wish I knew where to get some here... oh Linda...

From the dates Doug wrote on some of my cuttings they are SLLOOOWWW to grow.
I'm going to break off a "leaf" from where the white one bloomed tonight just for you. I'll see if I have some of the hot pink, don't remember how big it is. I'm using 1/2 Orchid Mix and 1/2 Cactus Mix for potting and balanced feeding w/ NO or low nitrogen 6-6-6 or 2-8-8
I plan to thin the Japanese Iris this week, I'll let you know when I have actually been to the post office
Orchids are some thing I could get serious about

Orchids are something I plan to get serious about some day after I have conquered the outside garden and the pond. No rush on the iris, I'm not moving.

I got several small rooted cuttings about a year ago from a friend. The dates read anywhere from 2001, still small no bloom, to 2004, the first bloom I got! It's my understanding that they can take several years to bloom.
The same friend just gave me 9 more unrooted cuttings and yesterday my daughter gave me a bag full she had recieved from a friend that is moving! Guess I had better get them all in pots and see if I can keep them alive

Charla, you'll be opening a specialty nursery soon!!!
My burros tail is blooming, never seen one bloom before. It hangs over the inside pond in the greenhouse. In the last pic you can see the honey dripping off the flowers.

Jojo, funny to see crown of thorns as a houseplant, my neighbor has them all over his yard. The hoya is fantastic ! A friend gave me a small piece but ... :( Hers is all up into her orange tree twining around.
Yeah , I think I'll just say no to more epis! !rofl

Epis over-winter just fine indoors. I moved a number of them from California to Arkansas three years ago, and they do just great. I keep them in a heated shop building for the winter and move them back outside in the spring, when I move the orchids back out. Actually, all my tropicals do better back here then they did in Southern California - they seem to thrive in the humidity. Lucky them - they thrive, I wilt!

JoJo, my hoya has also been blooming for months. I had it for 5 years before it got its first bloom and now it won't stop I was going to move it out for the summer but since it seems happy it can stay inside.
I burnt my Rose of Crowns putting it out and forgetting to bring it in... a hot day and it fried. I think it is going to recover though. It sits on the patio table all summer and blooms like crazy without any care except what the rain brings.
Lynda, you should post some pics of your orchids. My Phal is about to bloom again and the other two have been rescued from overwatering.... I hope!!!

Don't you love the smell of the flowers on the Hoya at night? I've noticed during the rainy season when the house get muggy they also smell..
