I have been away for the weekend, and would like to show you waht a Hotel thought would make a great Koi pond ( I think not  )

The Pond or water feature as that is all it is, is around 10' in diameter and around 18" deep. It is the home to 18" to 20" Koi, at the time of my visit there was no running water, but a small box filter was spotted some 20' away from the pond ( I asume it is part of the feed to the water feature in the midle of the pond.), but the pump was not turned on. There was no air stones or anything, to give the water oxygen. :-x . And all of the fish had a lacking of colour, by that I mean washed out. I have written a letter to the Hotel owners this evening, pointing out my thoughts on the conditions the Koi are being kept in, and advised him what he would need to give them a better life. ( Politley of course) . Give me a few mins to load the pics. The first one is the nice plaque on the wall of the feature.

Yes, not the best home for them. There may be filtration inside the fountain but I doubt there is much of a biological filter. Will be interesting to see if you get a reply. Careful, you may end up with more fish :frisbee:

Merlin, I just wanted to tip the hat to you for taking the time out to write them a letter. I took a little time and went back to my photo library and found a picture of Dean Koi's old home. It was a hot tub someone converted into a pond and looked ok however they up and left her from 10/03 until we found her 5/14/04 for sure and probably much longer I am guessing more likely back to as late as 6/03 without anything i.e. pump, filter or food. Below that is a pond where I found one live goldie and the picture of the fridge was sitting on the back porch above the pond leaching decaying liquefied food into the pond. As for the smell well all I can say is it was much worse the fridge looked and don't ask me how the heck anything could survive but one did. The situation for these guys was much different and the owner of the hotel should correct the problem for the sake of professionalism. Allen

By the look of that fridge, these folks must of up and left in a hurry, running from the law perhaps :) Good for you to rescue the fish though.

Ewww...poor fish but lucky you found them Ozzy.

Do you think Merlin that because their carp people have the misconception they can live in anything? Good job to you for pointing out their needs.

Merlin, Way to go...

A year and a half ago we were at the archie bray foundation a place for pottery artist to display there art and learn.. They have a small pond as well, it was only about 18 inches and very muddy with goldfish, I offered to come up clear it out and plant some flowers, just because at no cost, they told me they leave it as is in order to discourage the racoons from eating the fish... I tried to explain that plants would help hide the fish therefore discouraging critters but in any case they would always have critters as it is their natural instinct.. No go... They wanted left as is.. LOL I dont know how it could be considered a attraction when the fish werent visible to enjoy..

I hope you get better results...

Cheers
Jojo

Those poor guys look like they'd get sunburn, no shade, no place to hide, and swim in a circle all day. It is just sad, and amazing they would want to leave them like that.

Jackie, those people weren't drug dealers wink wink they where just miss understood. Inside the garage was a false wall and a 8X20 room setup for doing some serious plant growing however since there where no windows I have yet to figure out what they where trying to grow all I could find was dead stalks. I am still trying to figure out what the huge lights where used for. Allen

Well I'm sure it was just rope they were growing  Rope needs a lot of light to grow strong

I am looking forward to this fall so I can post some pictures of a property I did work on near the boarder of Canada and WA. It was a meth lab and the people where dumping the chems from the garage conversion over a bank that sloped to a natural pond at the bottom. As for the pond yes there was something alive in it however knowing the circumstances behind this property I was not willing to investigate and figured Mother Nature can take her course on this one.

As for the tweekers that owned that place: the husband is in jail and the wife retreated to BC and left the kids with the grandparents. Sad part of the whole situation WA state did not disclose this one as a known high volume lab and the well was near the garage and very shallow at only 25 feet.

Sorry for the long winded post but I feel too many people are afraid to say or do anything about problems like the one Merlin witnessed and turn a blind eye to it because of a lot of different reasons. However if this thought process doesn't change there are people that could be faced with a property next door to them in the condition I found the one above. The irony of the situation on the property above is that the property next door was busted for brewing 6 months later. Allen
