I snapped a few pics of my fish today right after I fed them their honey nut cherrios! The largest fish, the white and red one, was 36" when I put him in the pool last year. He is bigger now. My deep end is 42" wide and he can barely fit longwise in the channel. WOW! He is big. Halloween is right behind him. She likes about 4" being as long as the channel. One of my babies from 2007 is HUGE! She was 19" when I put her in the pool last year. She is bigger than most of the fish I have had since 2004. She is the white one with little flecks of red and black on her. Not a pretty fish but she is mine :)

Cinn, they are beautiful and wow sooooo big, I really don't think any of mine will ever be that big, I must have short gene mutts. Your water is so clear also, yes I wish I could have mine viewable all year....maybe that is some of the reason mine are short, I have a short growing season :HAHA:

They all are big fish. We found out just how big when we moved them back to the pond from the pool. They didn't look that big in the water! I guess my fish eat all but a couple of months out of the year. I am feeding them once a day now since the last cold front came down.

nice to be able to feed most of the year, I would say I've maybe feed 3 times in the last almost 2 months when the water temps went up to 60 for a couple days.....but for the most part they don't even come to the edge to meet/greet me.....hugging the bottom except for the sunny days, which are not that often.

Good grief Cinn, my how they have grown. I remember when they were little babies!! you are a good fish mom!
You certainly have a knack. Love your long finned ones....My favorite!
You have a great growing season too.
Phil, your white one that we took out was very large...are we not talking similar size?
Yes Jackie's are huge..and beautiful too.
Annie...where have you been? Haven't seen a post from you all year? Yours must have grown this year...

Marg, it's only 28" a baby compared to Cinn's which has a whopping 8" more to her larger koi which is 36" and that's humongous, yes I think Jackie's large girl is somewhere up there too. :yup:

Cinn... Don't know what to say... I'm speechless after reading the sizes of your fish... guess I'm suffering from koi envy!

Thanks all! Philly come on down :) We have plenty of room and maybe by that time we will have everything put back in order with the deck cover etc.
My fish stay hungry. They would eat every 2 hrs if I let them! I was figuring today and I have gone through approx. 65 lbs of food this year. Now I am counting the boxes of honey nut cherrios! They are more expensive than the koi food!
Some of my original koi didn't grow as much. I have watched them and the most virosous eaters are the ones that grow the most. My females right now are so fat! They almost look like they are full of eggs! I guess they are just storing up for the winter while they can!
wow Cinn you have monsters in your pond. It must be quite a sight to see. Keep up the awsome job, you give some of us something to shoot for with our fish.

Thanks Cinn & Remmy, my cousins live in Huston so will try visit both of you all at the same time but viewing kois and their ponds always get first choice. And yes you do have to buy a lot of koi food as they will eat you out of your savings.

Well Peg, my pond was clear all summer but there is some string algae this fall so I have been taking it off the side walls and waterfall last week, tried to do it by hand but the water was so :censored: cold so had to remove it with a bamboo stick.

This method works GREAT.
We used to use a 1/4" wooden dowel rod. Chuck it up into a cordless drill and then spin away. Gets major clumps of string algae that way. Just hit reverse and pull the clump off the rod. If you use a surgical glove to pull the string algae off the rod, you never get your hands wet. Throw the clump into an old Walmart bag and then dispose of it when it gets full.

Remmy, that's a fantastic idea didn't even think of it, when you are pi**ed off with the green stuff and having to remove it you just see red.
How well would that work with a 5' deep pond ??

Algae is usually near the surface, use a longer dowl

If you use a longer dowel / rod you will have to go with 3/8" or 1/2" size for strength so it doesn't snap with the weight of the algae.
