Hi everyone ..just a little history on our back yard pond in sunny?? British COLUMBIA .We've had our back yard pond for 10 years now .Wifie knew what she wanted and i stayed clear lol.She hired a bobcat and in three hours the hole was dug .She then called our daughters bf's baseball team and for some KFC and cold beer,we had the liner in .We don't have a bottom drain ,but the system works fine. The pond averages 30 inches and we have a "DEEP END " that goes to four feet .Total volume is 2500 gallons. The water comes from the pump grid.( a square shaped grid made from plastic pipe that we cut slits into, and the pump is attached to that ).via plastic one inch tubing, and up to the bottom of our mechanical filter, which is a hard plastic box, sitting about three feet above pond level. The water goes in the bottom of the mechanical filter ,through about 9 layers of mitalla, and flows out the top in a pipe that goes to our 50 gallon bio (barrel) filter .We quite enjoy cleaning the mechanical weekly (i'm retired lol)We have five koi and some pond goldfish ,The koi were around 5inches when bought (pond mutts) and the largest is now 30 inches. In summer ,we have the pond about 70% covered with hyacinth, duck weed, etc. We have umbrella palms, iris, bog bean, cannas also in the pond .It is a simple pond ,but it works for us .I also keep records of water tests that i do every two weeks .Regards Jack
