I found 2 babies I thought were goldfish (brownish colored) in the pond today, however they had barbals like a koi.....so are they koi, or can hybrids have barbals????

From what you have described to us sounds like they are baby koi. :yesyes:

Think I read that brown color koi or goldfish fry are from spawning in colder water... :-) They will turn color eventually, and yes they are koi. :-)

If they have barbels then they are koi. Its not unusual to have brown koi and they probably will not change colour, certainly mine have not in 3 years.

I agree with the both of you, I have a few babies and they are still dark brown, what do I know I'm color blind remember. :HAHA:

Well thanks for the answer, I guess we will wait and see what color if any they turn out to be.

That the fun in growing baby koi you never know how they would turn out, you just have to wait and see.

Anything you think that's worth keeping out of the lot. :)

Yes, a couple of half decent kohaku, two nice looking kujaku, and one cool looking dark metallic and a few showa... won't keep them all, but definitely keep a year to watch them develop... that's the fun part for me - If you would like an update on the ones I don't keep I'll keep you informed - I can always hand deliver to you on one of my trips.
