I was refering to the 3rd fish bought for 20 bucks and my guess, which was the tancho gin rin. It looks like the same fish, just less pretty. Red spot is going downtown.

luke frisbee
03-30-2005, 09:40 PM
welll yep that is it...

And "3rd fish" and " 3rd fish bought for twenty bucks" are two very different fish...why the heck didn't you just say "tancho's spot is changing.

and actually what I saw was the handle that went back from the "dot" was fading two days ago. then yesterday morning I could really see it was disappearing. At the afternoon feeding the handle was GONE. now today I worked. tomorrow I will see them again...if it has dramatically changed i will try to get another pic.

Doing anything different Lukie,... I know it's "common" for tancho to lose the spot but this quickly? Shame, was a cute fish.

I've heard hard water can make red disappear...think that's true?

luke frisbee
03-30-2005, 10:23 PM
Disappearing red has not happened to any of the other 150+ koi I have had through that system.

Busy B
03-30-2005, 10:39 PM
Well that's not it then is it?

Over the years I have had about 20 tancho's. I have to say all of them have lost the tancho on them. I think the trick is buying a nice 2 year old or older. Buying $20 tancho's isn't going to cut it. Last year I got this one and I hope it holds it's tancho.

I am reporting the siting od a ghost in my pond.....the tancho is a ghost od its former self...and still fading.
IF I was forced to give a reason i would say my well water did it... the spot really accelerated its fading after large water changes. none of the other kois' hi was affected.

I have a Shiro Bekko,When I first bought it, it had an amazing array Of sumi, which sadly it lost, all of it, not just some.
Now I know this can be contributed to water quality, but mine was always within acceptable levels. However it now seems to be regaining some of the sumi although not all. But I have noticed it getting more prominent ocer the weeks, Maybe it will all return if so watch this space.Perhaps yours will too

Do he?
Sumi usually goes and then comes back....Hi just goes. Well I never knew that luke, all the anguish I and others suffered, the little blighter wasn't no ugly duckling at all, but a swan  There are other patches under the skin that I noticed a couple of minutes ago so he might become rather dashing don't you think?? . have a nice day.

The hi(red) going does suck as that is not usually a good thing. Some young koi that we have had looked like they had weak hi and thought it would disappear. As the koi grew so did the red and became more solid as time goes. Our water is very hard and they say that is not the best for reds but not the case so far. The sumi or black seems to like hard water and comes out in a koi nicely. The underlying sumi that is seen under the skin is like a beaken of hope as you watch the koi grow you wish the black to come up but it's not always a for sure thing. For me the underlying sumi is a fun part of watching the koi develop as you can see from Tom's Tancho sanke the sumi is creeping up and should become more intense to a laquer black. A nice koi to watch grow in the next few years providing the tancho stays solid which to me looks pretty good.

So if you have hard water, your best be is to stay away from fish with lots of hi?

luke frisbee
04-10-2005, 10:42 PM
Busy..it is more about the "qualities" of the hi than the amount...some hi can handle the harder water better than others.
And on Koi Bito a gentleman brought forth a splendid bit of free thinking.....perhaps koi born and bred and CULLED in hard water will be "good hi" koi in hard water...it makes SOOO much sense that when fry/tosai are culled that are grown(developed) in hard water, those that have the genetic make-up to develop good hi in those conditions will be "good hi" koi when they become adults.
So if a breeder was smart they would develop their koi line in the prevailing water conditions of the clientele they seek to curry.

Jackie Ramo

Any clue as to why it would go so quickly, it looked pretty solid in the first pic. Mind at those prices one can't ask for the money back

This often happens when a breeder.....and I am not saying that this is the case here......, loads up his fry with color enhancers at a very early stage in their development. The results, are stunning 4 to 8 month old koi that go stark white within a month or so after color enhancers are removed from their diet.

Jackie Ramo
05-10-2005, 06:53 PM
So if you start feeding colour enhancers, does it come back?
