He's back, or should I say, he never left

have been catching glimpes of a bird....that looked like a heron, all winter long.
Well, living in Central NY, with our cold and snow, I knew that it couldn't be......no stupid heron would stay up here for the winter. I asked a customer one nite (who works for a wildlife refuge) if they would stay, and she said that they had a couple of herons who stayed this winter....the rivers never froze over, giving them a place to go. Not good news.
Well, I went out this afternoon to clean out the beaver dam.....and lo and behold, in the swamp, sitting there on a stump.....was a heron.
Think I am glad my pond is green....

At least you know he's there... and can be prepared for his possible visit. Hopefully the creeks and rivers will keep him satisfied.

I was surprised myself when reading about herons how far north they winter. Apparently as long as there is open water...
