View Full Version : Changes in Koi as they grow
I have seen some before and pictures of your koi as they have matured.
I would like to see some more young pictures and mature ones of the same fish.
I didn't realise that koi could change that much.
:frisbee: Are you willing to share? Don't be shy.
Jackie, I was impressed with Alice. Could you show an earlier picture of him?
Since I am missing mine....let's look at yours!

Hello Marg, welcome to the forum :)
Let's see what I can dig up for now,.... This is Moo, a doitsu Shiro Bekko
#1 is at a four months old (2005), and #2 is in 2006, & #3 is in 2007.

Moo found a new home late this past spring so no more updates for 2008.

Here is alice when I first got him. Under him is Cooper (Yes Alice Cooper) they are in quarantine waiting to go out to the main pond. Cooper is another fish who changed dramatically from young to old. She passed unfortunately but there is a pic of her. I called her the forest fire fish. She darkened and lightened with the seasons.

Hi Terri,
Thanks for the picture of Moo. I can see looking back where the black will come up as he ages. It is nice to see how they change. How long does it contunue...one year, three? or always? or?
As he is mostly white, he is a Bekko? If there is almost half black and white how do you know it is a black on white or a white on black?
Sorry for the beginner questions.

Marg,
Shiro Bekko are "white" based fish, a white koi with a stepping stone black pattern along the back (typically above the lateral line) and no black marks on the head (variety standard for show purposes mainly). There are also Aka (red/orange base) Bekko and Ki (yellow base) Bekko.
There are what we call "Arkansas" Bekko - these koi have a speckled black patches all over the base colour - what we term (politely) as pond grade.
Attached are a few photo's, I had a hard time finding a poor example of a Shiro Bekko but did find an Arkansas Aka Bekko  I also found a photo with a Shiro Utsuri, Shiro Bekko, and Sanke - in this you can tell the difference side by side from a bekko and utsuri (black based fish).
Hope that helps :)
There are a few threads in the Koi Appreciation (http://backyardpuddle.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=50) section with regards to the differences of Bekko and Utsuri if you'd like to read them.

Here's another one,...

She isn't a stellar example of a goshiki but the development was interesting to watch...
I appreciate you keeping my request in mind. This all a learning experience.
Did you bring yours indoors yet?
Is there any special one on your Xmas list this year?
Thanks,
Marg

I was in Guelph just yesterday....not far from the pretty town of Rockwood! Visited my daughter at U of G and went to the Fish Farm Supply place. Beautiful garden you have and I love Creamcicle! Just put in a new pond here. So sorry summer is over...some of my fish were quite active today! Annie and all the critters on the farm!
I am about 12 minutes away from the university. My daughter went there a few years ago. Next time you are down...maybe we can get together.
I have often thought of going to Fish Farm Supply...just haven't. What did you get there for your pond?
You know we want pictures of your new pond...always want pictures!
That picture of Creamcycle was a good one. He? was my best koi till the heron had him for lunch.:banghead:
We now have fishing line strung from every fence post over the pond to a corner post of the gazebo. Since the post is metal...we can slide it up (raise the lid) when we are in the back yard and lower it (close the cage) when we are not. We also have two rows horizontally around the pond edge as a fence to keep the heron out.:x:
So far so good.:yup:
Let me know when you will be in town,
Marg

Thanks for the invitation Marg....I am certainly going to take you up on your offer. I have been in a funk since the coyotes killed my dog Chloe. Took her right from the side of the pond. My best friend for over 10 years gone in an instant...I am still looking for her head to bury with the rest of her. There were 3 coyotes in the field this morning...one was huge! All animals are kept inside now...we are prisoners in our own home!
My new pond is 30 feet by 110 feet. I am digging another as well so I can grow fish for people. The new pond has 56 of my finest and favourite 12 inch fish. I bought a fountain for the original top pond. Going to fix it up with lights in the spring. I love driving through the area you live in....soooo many ponds!
Annie and all the critters on the farm.
Annie, so sorry to hear about Chloe:hugs: . Must have been quite a shock. We had to put old Teddy down a few weeks ago and I still catch my self looking for him. We all hear have gone through this before and know how you feel. Get a trapper out to deal with them. If they can get an easy meal they will hang around till there is nothing left.

Sorry to hear about your Teddie. I can speak about Chloe now without crying and I remember all the good times.
The neighbor across the road feeds all wild animals...The other night there was a coyote in my driveway and one leaving his! These animals are predators and are causing a problem all over Canada and the USA. Who or what will be next? Now I know what happened to all my cats!
Annie and what is left of all the critters on the farm!

Thank you Marg! It is really nice when people understand. I found some baby pictures of Dot and Bogart when I had them in a tank so many years ago...so I am going to try to post some before and after pictures. Bogart is white. Both are butterfly koi.
Their fins are soeautiful. Can't believe how much Dot changed. How old did they get to?

I still have Dot and Bogart......I started with 25 koi and they are 2 of the originals. I have a butterfly koi named Creamcicle as well. He is one of the first 25. They are all about 6 or 7 years old. Still trying to find a decent picture of him and still trying to post pictures

Hi Annie,

Hi Marg,
Sometimes when I try to post a picture I get told I am not logged in and other times the screen goes blank. It is hit and miss for me. Resizing pictures is not easy on the program I have. On my old computer it was much easier. The last pictures I posted went up with out a hitch. Since then no luck!
It is snowing like crazy here.....time to hibernate! We have been so busy around here lately. We finally connected the outside stove. An open boiler system and it is sooooo warm in the house now. No more oil bills and the 2 hot water heaters and furnaces have been turned off......lots of heat and hot water! Just thinking how to heat the pond...! Then I could take photos all year. Take care....Annie and all the critters on the farm.

annie, haven't been around for a while, but would like to say how sorry I am about Chloe, how horrible. I have lost many pets over the years and none have been easy. We have coyotes here also and everytime I let out the cats I worry as I've seen them in the yard a few times. And I must add that your fish are beautiful.....maybe one day I will get a butterfly
