Hi all I just wanted to share a bit of media info for upflow type filters and what I have found to be a good all around media and discuss why.

Rock-sucks to deal with when you want clean it or move the filter
lava rock- dido
plastics like dio balls and k1 - VERY EXPENSIVE :banghead:
Polyester Filter roll - cheap for qty and easy to deal with

I buy it from grainger for about $42 per roll inc s&h :phfft: with my discount and it ships via truck because the box it is shipped in is about 3ft long, 3ft with and 2 ft tall but doesn't weight much.

One roll lasts me a year because I have very heavy load on the winter tank they are in now. I don't even bother cleaning it, I dump the media, clean the tote and put new media in with as snip from the old media in the bottom.

Nope no oils used by AirHandler, good bacteria growth and one other nice feature is you can use it as a backup when you run out of furnace filters for your house

I can post the part number from grainger so its not a mystery if you would like

alright lets see if i can do the photo thing I have a serious case of CRS  . anyhow if the pic turns out this is only a 1/2 a roll and I have been using this media for at least 3 years in my upflows.

ok I can't get the image to upload so if its ok go to grainger.com and search item # 5C443 trust me when I tell you this picture on graingers site does not serve the product justice when it comes to the quanity of the fliter. In any 55g barrel you get enough media for two filters easy.

Allen I followed your upflow for a couple years. I decided to axe the air handler and go with a 2" filter mat. Much easier to clean and it works just as well as the air handler. My pond has always had such clear water :)
