View Full Version : A lot less string algae this year
I'm not sure why, but the string algae is not nearly as bad this year so far as I've had in the past 10 years. Normally in spring I'm pulling the pumps every day and clearing them, I'm raking the sides and pulling mounds of it out every day. This pond and my previous pond both. Light fish loads, bigger fish loads, more plants, fewer plants, nothing seemed to matter. Only difference this year is I've been using more of the koi clay, I've doubled the amount I use, still put it in every 3 days as always, and the UV has been on since I started up the little bog instead of waiting until April to turn it on.
Still a nice growth on the pond sides for the fish to gnaw on, but not to the point where it's needed to be raked out at all, and no clumps on the pond bottom to lift out either. Just need to skim a little off the surface daily, but I mean very little.

It moved here Cindy!!! Although this string algae isn't as bad as some types I've had as it is staying in the pond with determination. I can hardly pull it off the liner or the rocks. No clumps on the bottom well a couple but easily removed and didn't come back. Last year it was this slimey stuff that floated up and released every afternoon.
I'll have to double up the clay and see if that helps.

:HAHA: I'm glad it moved somewhere else. I'm lost not having to deal with algae every afternoon when I get home from work. It's been such a ritual for me for years. It's probably just lulling me into a false sense of security and it'll hit me again without warning worse than ever. :HAHA:

Probably, there has never seemed a time when I didn't deal with at some point of the year. Should be gone soon.

Spent a couple of hours today pulling string algae. It seems to be changing so maybe dying off yet again... easier to pull out this time but it sure has a good hold on things. Used the long pole of the net that has a rubber tipped handle to reach the deep places.
I forgot, one other thing I did this year, I put a bag of phosphate remover in each bog as well. I used that stuff in my smaller ponds to control green water, the days before I had a UV, and found they worked well. One bag lasts for 3 months, no chemicals, I think it's a ground natural rock of some sort. I wish I could remember, too lazy to look it up right now.
Laguna brand comes in a 2 pack.
So that may be helping along with the double doseage of the koi clay.

That might do it, phosphates are what plants live on.
I'm sure this stuff will be gone once the veggie filter is up and running, one day next week.
