Crappy pic but lovely in the flesh  Ian's pick for 'yellow' at this time (his list for 'this one should never leave' LOL ).

And yesterday, my wife Pam picked this Matsuba for our pond! Ian bowled a couple of prospects for her, and while I also liked a Ki Utsuri, this was Pam's favourite by far.

It's a little older than in the picture, but still a young 'un, it will be nice to see how it develops.

Are you saying the Terri sold yet another one of Ian's fish :HAHA:

I'm sure that flash of yellow will bring smiles all summer.

I'm sure it will, Ki/Kin Matsuba are gaudy, so they have broad appeal. Of Ian's picks, I think this one is more appealing to the purist:

This trip was strictly for my wife. I do like the look of that Gin Matsuba, but if and when I am shopping again for myself, I think I will stick to Gosanke. But yes, I really like that Gin Matsuba!

Its nice that your wife shares your interest in the fish. Hubby enjoys the pond but always says if he had to maintain it, it would be filled in. The only fish he really is fond of is GG and maybe old Tweet.

Reg, how's the new koi doing?

Reg, how's the new koi doing?

It is obviously suffering from jaundice! I took the greenhouse down on Sunday so I could give the rest of the yard some attention. The bad news is that the Matsuba is now going to be much chillier than two weeks ago. The good news is that it is getting plenty of direct sun and seems to be happy hanging out with the other fish.

I picked up a polarizing filter this morning, but I haven't tried to get any of the fish into a bowl for a good portrait. They are 12"-18" below the surface in this photo, the drain in the background is about 66" deep.

Speaking of the drain... those naughty fish keep knocking the cover off the bottom drain! I am not going back into the water to fix it until things warm up again. Sheesh!

Maybe it recognizes old friends from a certain dealer's stock?

Yes, it seems comfortable swimming with the others, although at meal times it "strikes" the pellets and retreats back below the water in a flash. This suggest to me it is still a little stressed about the new environment.

Time cures all...

Have you seen them feed at Terri's.... they have to grab and dash or be run over in the mad crazy rush for food.

I have one from Terri's I got last year that does the same thing. He's the smallest. It seems as they get a little bigger they tend to relax a bit more. We call him Zipper, he's the ADHD fish of the pond :HAHA:

Very different behaviour when you have a larger number of koi in a smaller space, of course. We'll see if it settles down given some time. Also, I have more Koi coming over the next few months (the two getting treatment ought to be back in the pond soon, plus a few I've ordered), so it may feel more secure in a larger school.

The pond was infested, but when I started up the skimmer it grabbed most of the clumps. I installed a UV for Spring, and that plus clay seems to be doing the trick. The koi graze on the pond walls all day long, of course.

Why do you think you have so much algae? Is there something significant in your setup?? Is that a good sign???

No too much algae is never a good sign. I'm overstocked and underfiltered at present. Haven't hooked up the veggie filter as yet but did clean the other filter which of course sets the system back. This to shall pass. At least this algae is behaving, staying on the walls and not clogging the skimmer. Water is clear and fish look good. No worries mostly.

Lucky here so far, the pond has a nice layer of green carpet. Some areas are not doing as well. but after being bombarded late last fall with salt and PP it looks not to bad. Feel for ah Jackie, had lots of string algae last year and none at all so far this year. The boys are getting a good 30 % water change tomorrow, water tests to follow. Lots of rain the last couple of days.
I miss my yellow fish  at me... It's so nice to see that flash of yellow in a pond.

I'm surprised at how much I have, seems to have stopped growing now, thankfully. Hope to get a water change done today, did old Tweet yesterday, he's ready to go out side. There's a big splash of yellow!!! as well as a Ki something-or-other :HAHA:

He's certainly more than a splash of yellow for sure. Did you ever find the little guy that's in the tank with him?

I was inspecting another fish today, so while I had the net out, I bowled the Kin Matsuba. I didn't get great pictures, but here's what he looks like after a week or so in the pond:

I didn't notice anything at the time, but in the picture it looks like there's some redness in the tail fin. Shoud I be concerned?

Terri

Looks great :)

The redness in the tail fin could be just the stress from netting and being bowled... but still, watch and see how it goes over the next couple days.

Nothing I'd worry too much about but worth watching.
