I wanted to let you know hey Spring is not far off! Those flowers are Patchwork Petals. I got them free from Burgess Seeds a few years ago. I can't find them anywhere now. I wish I could buy some more. Whent hey first come up I didn't know what they looked like and I thought they were weeds. We have a weed that looks similar. They are beautiful little flowers. I tried to get a pic of my Widow's Tears but the bloom had already gone. I have ALL white Widow's Tears. Then last year a baby came up and it bloomed blue! And it is back again BLUE. My Scabosia have buds on them as well. When they bloom more pics to come. I can't wait until my Azaleas finish blooming so you can see them. They are absolutely beautiful!

Razen the Robins should be coming your way soon! They have left this area so it won't be long until they make it there. Snow?? Wow! I can't imagine. I am sure glad I live here! I don't do well in the cold. The Robins winter here every year. We have had a bumper crop of Robins this year. At least the neighborhood hawk didn't get them all this year! grrrrr

We got flurries again yesterday... sunny today so the pond should open up enough that I can see the fish again.
Pam, were those free seeds from Burpees for the flowers? They almost look like species tulips.

Jackie they were free bulbs from Burgess. I have looked on their website and looked in the books and I can't find them anywhere! I need to break up that one clump when they finish blooming. The blooms last forever. I am going to upload my blue Widow's tears pics today. How one blue came out of all white I do not know!

Jackie thanks so much for finding it for me! You are worth your weight in GOld ;) Okay Chuck now YOU gave me chills looking at that pic. brrrrrrrrrr I am sure thankful I live here! Haha But ya'll will be able to rub it in this summer when I am roasting and you are not! Where I don't stick my head out the door because of the heat and humidity! Then it will be your turn!

That's true Cinnamon. We can put up with not seeing the kids for three months for temps mostly in the 80's and little if any humidity. Guess that is why we retired here. When it snows, we can look out the window and take pictures rather than have to go to work in it.

Okay a couple of pics of my widow's tears are now up. Click on the link above. I do not know how I wound up with one blue one when all I had was white! And they had been planted a few years. Then last year this one just popped up blue.

Cheer up Chuck at least your pond is open, mine is still 80% covered with ice even after the warm sunshine today. Did see 2 fish though.
You are welcome Pam, I was curious for myself exactly what those flowers were.

Jackie thanks for the info!! Last year there was only one stalk and now this year there are 2 stalks. I was so tickled that they were blue. They are carefree and so easy to grow. I just let them go. I have never had a problem getting them to grow.

I admit they are an easy plant. I do wish the flowers lasted a bit longer into the day. Truly a morning person's plant, much like morning glories. I planted one where it gets morning sun but afternoon shade and it blooms into the afternoon.

I snapped a couple of pics this morning of my Azaleas! I thought I would give you some more color. Plus we have are suppose to have severe storms tomorrow afternoon. They will kill all the blooms. They look like mush after a hard rain  They aren't fully bloomed yet either. Maybe some will survive. The red and purple are at the front of our house. The solid purple are at the south end of our house. Enjoy!

Wonderful colour!!! Hopefully in a few weeks time I can show you the rhodo's blooming here.
Blue Bonnets... Lupins right?
Cinnamon
03-25-2005, 02:26 PM
Texas Bluebonnets are a little different than Lupines. They are tighter and the colors more bright. Believe me there are a difference. We have planted them next to bluebonnets before and you can see the difference. They are similar though.
Jackie Ramo
03-25-2005, 05:13 PM
I'll take your word for it. They look like lupins I wonder if the hybridization has made the changes. Some flowers no longer look like the originals, look at tulips.
Cinnamon
03-25-2005, 09:14 PM
Jackie that could be. The regular Lupins are a little taller and the blooms are not quite as thick like the Texas Bluebonnets. They are close though :-o

Well not all roses look alike either.
My pond iced over tonight after being 70% open today. It will thaw again to morrow but having below freezing temps at night is delaying spring.

I can look at snow out of my window too ... it's up in the mountains where it belongs!

The opposite end of the spectrum...somewhere under that blanket of white is my pond...good news is that was last year...we didn't get that much snow this year..I can see patches of ground...is it over yet?

Jackie I keep trying to send some of this Texas Heat up there! Ya'll are still sending cold fronts down here! We are in for our last round tomorrow. When the front moves in this afternoon it is severe storms once again. Maybe I can get some more lightning pics! I think my rain dance did Ozzy good from the looks of the weather up there. It has been way too long since I had to do a rain dance! ;) Most of mine has been RAIN GO AWAY DANCES!

I expect that warm front to really hit here about Wed. They say we will hit 13C or about 55F and sunny. Today it will be about 40F and sunny. My fish are on the move and up from the bottom. They know its spring even if there is ice on the pond.
I was just sending the cold down to remind you to send the warm up

Okay I thought I would post a couple more pics. My first rose bloom and my bluebonnets. They are so beautiful. We don't mow that area until they seed and dry up. Sometimes the weeds are there but it is worth it!

Is that huge pink mound in the backgroud the azalea??? huge!!!
Love the field of bluebonnets. Do the blooms last a long time? Here with trimming a lupin with bloom and rebloom.
Cinnamon
04-04-2005, 05:55 PM
Jackie we don't trim them. We let the blooms go to seed and dry. Then we mow them. They spread really fast that way. There are tons of Bluebonnets around Austin. You can drive the main Highways and be awed at the site. The only thing is tourist wreck them. They are kind of fragile. If you trample on them it kills them. Tourists are not careful and climb in the middle of a bunch of them to get photo ops. :(
That is an azalea! They grow very fast around here. I keep mine around the house trimmed to below the windows. That is about 7 or 8 ' off the ground. After they bloom I trim them. I trim again just before I put up the Christmas lights also.

Darn tourists! They're everywhere!!! We have a similar problem with the Trilliums which are the provincial flower They look so pretty but are very fragile and it takes 7 years for the darn things to bloom.
We tell the tourists its against the law to pick them, it isn't but hey!! it works. Besides they stink if you pick them... don't ask how I know

Jackie the Bluebonnets are the Texas State Flower as well. That is why we try to protect them! I have sat in fields of bluebonnets but I am very very careful where I walk. I guess tourists just don't think or don't care :(
Jackie Ramo
04-07-2005, 09:10 AM
To be fair, most tourists don't know about local stuff, that's why they are there, to see it and hopefully learn about it. When one sees huge fields of things one doesn't think that they could possibly be fragile.
I have a few crocus blooming now  I'd better get the winter debris out of the gardens before everything pops up. Problem with this year's weather, the plants haven't seemed to wait for the snow to clear before coming up.

I snapped some pics of my Umbrella palms and part of our yard so you can get a perspective of it. We have 3 acres. The trailers you see to the edge are our rent trailers. It is a big yard! We keep it manicured but this year have been a little slack doing the pond.
I never knew Umbrella Palms were water plants. Our's is planted by the septic tank. No wonder they have done so well! The pics are after I took the winter dead off of them. I had Heiko stand next to the so you could see the heighth. They get 8 - 10' tall every year!
The other pics are from the back of the house. The house is to the left and the building you see most of is our shops.

Bite your toungue! Heiko is already talking about it! Heck we have to finish the first one!! It is a lot of lawn to take care also. And all my flower beds. WHEW! It is hard for me to keep up with! I think I need to hire a gardener! lol That curved elevated bed in that pic is my calla bed. When they start blooming I will take pics. It is 30' long and 2' wide. It was a feat building!
