Pond is frozen over, no water change here. Rain tomorrow and a water change for the indoor pond and guppy tank.
No water changes for me until March likely. Rain today, snow tonight and lots of snow on Friday. I so want winter to end. :tantrum:

Next time I take a winter vacation I am going to take it in February.... I need one now :yup:
This is how the yard and pond have looked for way too long now. With the odd thaw in between. Hardly any snow right now, but by Saturday morning it should look like this again for a while. Unusual for me to have this much snow for a lot of the winter. We seem to just get a thaw to melt it all and then wham, we get hit again.

01-30-2008, 09:31 AM
It looks so lovely when you are inside looking. I'd call animal control about that bear in the yard :frisbee:
Do you have that snow now? All our snow melted yesterday and we only got the smallest of pixie dustings last night. We even have a big enough hole in the pond I can see the fish - all belly down, just the way I like them.
The wind otoh kept us awake. I made the mistage of looking out the window at the Siberian Elms twisting in the wind and then lay in bed waiting for the big one to land on the greenhouse

Hmmm...
To me, open water = water change. Just think, sitting and breathing the same water for weeks on end... not good! I try and get out there no matter what. Even if it's to cold to pump water away I just slowly run the hose for a few hours and allow the water to overflow. Fish are alway smiling after and I sleep better at night! I know it's a hassle with the hose and all, but I think less trouble come Springtime.
KD
:yup:
Both my pumps are in the pond. Can't get to them to do a water change. Between the rain and the snow, there is lots of new water being added all the time.
The pumps are each in one of the front corners of the pond oposite each waterfall, totally under ice. Even with the melting yesterday, still a good couple of inches of ice with a lot of water on top of it.
I've been scooping some out every week or two to test it, and there's been no problems.
Temperature was +7 when I got up at 4:00 this morning. +2 when I left for work at 5:45, -3 by the time I got to work at 6:30. Me thinks the pond will be looking like a skating rink again when I get home. At least with most of it frozen I get get all the crap that blows on to it with all these wild winds we're getting today.

Pond is frozen again now and the fish I assume have gone back to sleep.
I'm sure the light woke them up as the pond has been snow and ice covered for quite a while now. I did shovel a bit of snow off when it was very deep but they still would have been pretty dark. Even old GG was up and about looking this morning. No one came to the top to look at me though.

Just in from walking the dogs. Sure is pretty if one doesn't have a) drive or B) shovel.
Had to go out and knock the snow off the evergreens this morning they were so weighted down they were touching the ground.

Well so much for our skiff of snow. We now have had over a foot in less then 4 hours. All winter the snow & wind has come from the West. To- day it's all from the east.

REM, if you don't have to go out in it and you don't have to shovel it - its pretty enough. Its fresh so it sparkles in today's sunlight but since they are now saying it will snow for the next 5 days... I want to move where there are palm trees.
Peg, I'm not sure you have more than us. its over my knees and we got ice and freezing rain as well which squishes it.
I don't know about all of you, but we are getting hit again. Had to drive Amber to work this morning and there are white outs all over the place and it's blowing like crazy. Hope I can't get to work tonight

Terri
02-11-2008, 08:37 AM
Yesterday was bitter cold - sunny but that wind ! Saturday evening it rained a bit so all the fluffy snow we got turned into crunchy ice over night.
Kids were waiting in the house this morning for their bus, keeping an eye out through the kitchen window... not the regular bus driver today as the bus just slowed down a little in front of our house then kept going seeing no kids outside. Called our neighbor up the street to have him come back - lucky I did as they were also waiting inside for the buses arrival.

Yeah, we are getting lake affect snow. Smith's partner lives in a suburb north of the city and she has like 20 cm all month. Normal winters they have lots more than we do.

More snow tonight and more on the way for the end of the week. Drove to North Bay on Sunday. They have hardly any snow, cold as all get out but atleast you could see the ground. When will this winter be over?

We were up in Omemee on Sunday and I was surprised at how little snow they had. There are places here in the city where the snow has disappeared, usually near the highways but the backyard is still deep.
The depth of snow around the pond makes it hard to do a water change

Since our 36cm snowfall last Fri. the temps have been fairly warm and nice and sunny, a lot of snow has melted and yesterday the main pond was clear of ice. Depending on how this next front goes through we are looking at snow/rain mix starting tonight and then tommorrow, I'm hoping it is less then the 16cm they are saying we might get.

lots of winter algae in there.

What Temps would you start to put back your filters.

Jackie Ramo
03-27-2008, 08:48 AM
Netting out the algae is the first priority with a water change if you can do one. Since the filters have been off I'd wait until night temps stay above freezing, some wait longer.

Have had robins here for sometime now, I don't know what they are eating with the snow on the ground, got another maybe 7cms that stuck, most of it has been melting as it came down.
Here is what I saw sitting on the deck railing looking over the pond, not sure I think it is a Coopers Hawk, it didn't even mind that I was only maybe 6 feet away (but inside at the door) took quite a few pics, most were not good, then tapped lightly on the window and he left. /Better not come back for fish dinner http://www.cosgan.de/images/midi/boese/a045.gif

The robins overwinter here but one rarely sees them, they stay down by the creek. Now and again I will see them at the pond. Thought I saw a Cedar WaxWing yesterday but it flew off with a couple of other birds before I got a good look.
The bulbs are poking out through the snow, they know what time of year it is.

Raining pretty good now. Hopefully that will get rid of most of the remaining snow.
