When I saw this one on Quality Koi Co's web site I snapped her up, for whatever reason she really appealed to my eye. Listed as 'tategoi', koi for the future, I figured I'd take the gamble and roll the dice.
She was 2yrs old this past spring, on purchase and arrival she measured in at just 9 inches. Last evening Ian and I had the opertunity to net her up for a look see. She measured in at 12 inches (and a smidge more). I'm hoping my eyes aren't lying to me, she seems to be on the right track for colour/pattern definition. Just wish I had a mud pond to grow her up in...

Next spring she is going outside, more water and sunshine will do her wonders I hope.
I also took her brother, handsom boy and will post his pic later.
Comments/thoughts welcomed... have at her, let me know what you think - other than she's a 'pretty fish':HAHA:
Do you think the bleeding between the 2nd and 3rd steps will disappear or do you think they'll eventually completely join? Nice and clean around the red other than that area. The second pic I think I see a smidge of orange on one of her fins. Otherwise her shape is beautiful and her white is very nice too.

Well Cindy, you tell me...? Below is a closer look for you.
We're looking at Sashi and Kiwa, or the leading edge and trailing edge of the red.
Pic#1 is from March, Pic#2 is from Oct

Notice the thin dark red line through each red scale...
As for the smudge of red in the pec fin... yes that was there, now gone and nicely clean white.
looks like they're separating by those pics for sure
why do you wish you had a mud pond to grow her in?.....I know they grow bigger because of the size of a mud pond, but does it do something for their colour too? Anyway to replicate that in a regular pond, like letting green water take over a large outdoor pond, would that have the same effect?

Mud ponds offer more space, so yes for growth, but also the water itself is great for the skin... and the live food available as well adds to the over all health. You can't replicate that very well in a liner pond.

edges are sharpening up nicely. Pretty fish :frisbee: a little light on one side but the overall pattern is good.

Same thing I was wondering, glad to see the close up shots it gives it a more detailed perspective. Wouldn't you want more color on the left side to balance it better?
I think it'll continue to separate. My only concern is that the kiwa is not as tight as it could be in the close up shots. Has that fish been outdoors the whole time?
The koi is putting on weight really well. The tail has developed really nicely. Skin still looks soft. Is that an injury in the first step. The mark is in the same location in all three photos.

Hi Dan, how ya been?
Thanks for your input. The mark is a scale, just the way the light is hitting in each photo - she tends to favor being photographed on this side LOL pretty much all the shots taken are of her in that position.
I am 'ignoring' the kiwa, the under layer is there so one hopes it will stay clean.
Hey Terri,
Everything pretty good. Busy but good. :)
Quality Koi has that mud pond and guarentee program now that seems almost too good to be true. If I ever buy a fish from those guys, I'd take advantage of that. Can't beat a couple of season in the mud, especially if it's the first couple of years.

QK sure has come along, it's been fun and interesting watching their progress over the past few years.
We have a koromo there atm to be pulled, I hope worth the grow-out fee to have been held over there. I think she was is in the front pond...? Went in at 10" and Tara said she was 14.5" in August (they pulled the pond to rid it of tadpoles so took the opportunity to measure up the 'reserved' fish). I'm looking forward to seeing her.
If you have the chance to go take it,... choosing in person is far better than by photo.

So I mentioned that I took the above 'tategoi' Kohaku's brother,... also graded as Tategoi at QK.

He measured in at 10 inches on arrival, he's now 14 inches. Like his sister he has a preferred angle he likes his photograph taken LOL

So with a hands on approach here's the other side
Notice the similarities to his sister above?

Looks like his red is growing with him Terri. I like this one better. For some reason that red over the eye appeals to my eye.
I like this one better too. The kiwa is tighter. I really like the half kuchibeni.
You guys are doing a really good job raising them. Both fish are putting on weight in all the right places.

Ok, I think I like this one also, a bit more even, with a side part top. Do you think the last portion of red on the left side of the fish will break more, seems to have more white then the stock photo, same with the red closer to the head, will both sides stay connected? I'm all so new at this an color change befuddles me, I'm still waiting on underlying black on a sanke, I thought would have colored by now and hasn't
