Do all ochibas have more of this gill skin than other koi?
I can't say that I've noticed it on any of my other fish. Then again none of my other fish put their entire heads out of the water looking for food either

Don't know if it is indeed extra skin or if she's just flaring them more than the others trying to create more vaccuum to suck in food!

I have not noticed that on my Ochiba, but I do have that same thing on other of my koi. Must be a genetic throwback.

Thanks, I was curious if it was specific to ochibas or if it was just something with just this fish. I am glad to hear that she's not the ONLY fish with these weird gills. They kinda remind me of Dumbo's ears, you can't help noticing it.

Again, I guess I just have weird fish  Would this be a fault of any kind show wise? (not that I'm going to show her but hey, you never know, stranger things have happened) Just wondering.

Does it stick out all the time? In the 2nd pic you posted it looked like her mouth was closed but you could still see the gills standing out..

Now you've got me wondering Jackie. No, I don't think it's out all the time, it kinda flows with the water. It is just more noticable when she's excited for food. (ha ha, she's an ochiba, when is she NOT excited for food lol)

It seems to be more noticable as she's growing. I'll have to realy pay attention now.

Mudsow <going down to look again>

One of Martin's pictures the koi has quite the gill flap for lack of a better word on it. It wasn't out in the pic but quite pronounced. I noticed this as I painted the picture - Martins' permission of course!

Yeah, it just seems like an extended gill flap. When she's chewing a hunk o' shrimp those babies just flap in the breeze.

I can only imagine how huge and dumbo-like she will look when she's full grown! !wow!

The picture below is the same fish my big kohaku.
This flap is normal and verry flexible.

Martin, I wasn't trying to insult her beauty

Mudsow maybe your fish's flaps are more flexible... If you look at Martin's seminar post the same fish has a flare at the gills.

Beautiful fish Martin, and by no means am I critiquing her. I was just curious if this larger gill skin was only found on ochiba. Not that it hampers their beauty in any way, I'm glad to hear that other varieties can carry the same feature.

Now that's gonna be the first thing I look for when I look at pictures

Come to think of it, she can really flap them suckers. Just think of all the oxygen she can get in. If she were human she'd be a marathon runner! :D

I have seen koi with deformed gill extention's
They are formed like a trumpet edge
and stay that way.
Mostly that's a thing they were born with and are destroied.
in the culling process.

In normal KOI the edges are flexible like in the kohaku.
The picture freezes a dynamic situation in time.

Thats what I like best about taking pictures of koi. Capturing a moment in time. You see things that you would never be able to see or process in detail to my tiny brain anyway.
