It seems like most ponds have waterfalls. Can a pond still look nice without one?

Scott your not the first to tell me a pond can not look nice without a waterfall. I was told just yesterday that a pond without a waterfall isn't a pond.

I guess I don't have a pond. I think I'm going to have to call it a koi house.

I think it can... I've seen several ponds without and thought they looked nice - albeit more formal looking.

Tom, that's one heck of a nice NON-POND or would it be UN-POND :-? . I think it's a situation where another culture says a pond is not a pond without a waterfall to add to this they also say a pond should be located in front of the house with the waterfall facing the house with no flowering plants HUMM. I guess this shots the %#&t out of the backyard ponder :-| . Allen

PS did you know you are also supposed to have 30% Kohaku in your NON-POND/UN-POND?

Although my pond has a waterfall I do like ponds without. The stillness of the water reflecting the sky is so beautiful. I imagine being able to see the fish without the distortion of ripples would have a few bonuses.

Tom,

Excellent job on the pond!

Some day I too will be finished but I question the existance of that possibility of EVER being finished. We are in the process of building a second waterfall on ours and I think ours would look funny without one. I am having to be real carefull to ensure that two will not make it appear too crowded. They are on opposite ends however. We had to install another one due to circulation problems. Kinda shot myself in the foot on that one when we made the small end the big end. Your landscaping looks GREAT! I will be glad to get my yard back some day.

In looking at your picture, I don't know where I would put one if I had to build one. Your's looks so good, I'd be carefull adding one. Maybe you could incorporate a paddle wheel?

A pond is not one thing, they have many personalities and flavors. Your pond is lovely and as long as it is a POND in your eyes and heart than so be it! :-)
Everyone has an opinion too, some are'nt as meaningful but without them who would ya argue with? :-) Oh, Scott!
Nice pond, be proud of it and enjoy it. :-)

Love ya Scott!!!

Yours looks like a pond to me Tom;) And a beautiful one at that!

For those that use waterfalls, I'm sure that there is an oxygenation aspect to it and asthetics...

For you...what is your setup for oxygen? Blowers and...

Tom, is your construction post still at koivet?

Tom C
03-03-2005, 10:08 AM
Terri yes the thread is still on KV. I hope you don't mind me posting a link to it. http://www.koivetforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2865

I'm hoping to add three more koi to the pond in a few week. They are in QT right now. I have a tancho sanke, ginrin ochiba, and a showa to add to the pond. I will post some pictures after I add them to the pond.

How long did it take, start to finish, to complete your pond?

The Other Lynda
03-03-2005, 11:11 AM
Yes, Tom - tell the story of your pond. Busy - it took him twice as long as he expected, and cost twice what he budgeted. In other words, it was a "normal" pond build! Tom - I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR POND!!!

I remember bits and pieces...I still love the look of it
Oh and I've seen some of the new aquistitions on other boards...think it's possible you could show your koi to us here Tom? I know you have some beauties..

Tom, great looking pond!!! I for one, think that waterfalls in a lot of cases look contrived or even out of place. Of course my pond does'nt have a waterfall either. I a big proponent of raised wall ponds and their advantages (closer to the fish).

Terri

I'm glad it's still there Tom! And ofcourse you can post whatever link you want here, I'm glad you did, now those who haven't seen the process can go look! (that's why I asked LOL)

Ya know, we're all going to nag you to post your koi here and more about your pond ;-)

Nice looking pond tom, I must admit that I have to have a waterfall or a fountain, as I love to hear the water splashing . .

A very cool pond! Without a slope it is very hard to make a waterfall that looks good or natural on a pond. I'm never 100% happy with any we have done. Don't stop me from trying :D At the moment you could not tell we had any ponds with all the snow. Those palm trees kinda piss me off.... :D

should go shovel the driveway

I keep thinking I might put a waterfall or two on them pond. But when I turn off my diffusers it's so nice to be able to see all the koi real good. A waterfall will always add that ripple to the water.

The pond took 18 months to build. Part of the reason was because of the damage from the rain, and the cost to build it. We set a budget, but that went out the window about half way through. The ponds not 100% done yet. I still have some work to do on the filter house. I just need to find the time and get some good weather to do it.

If I can suggest only one thing to anyone thinking about building a pond. Take your time and talk to a lot of people on how to build it. Some simple little things will make it so much better. After talking to a lot of people, take what you like and run with it. This is what I did, and I love my pond. My old looked nice, but I was never happy with.

Ian, I know the palm piss a few people off, but the nice weather does has some down sides. I was in TX a few weeks ago and saw the prices of houses. I could get a real nice house 4,000+ sq ft, in a real nice area for a lot less. The down side to living here is housing. That real nice house in TX was about $400,000, that same house here would be $2,000,000. That's one of the down sides to sunny Southern California and palm trees. Just 12 more years, then I can retire and move to a place like that.

Tom, it would be hard to picture you pond with a traditional waterfall. Bill in Florida has a piece of art work that acts as his waterfall. Now something along the line I could see there. Maybe something only turned on with its own pump and is just a sculpture at the edge of the pond the rest of the time. Please no small boys peeing!!!! !rofl

Busy B

A waterfall on yours would look out of place I think...

Is the small shed behind the filter house?

And what did you use for the inside of the pond? Did you have it sprayed?

Tom, what happened to the pics you promised???

If you really want a waterfall how much trouble would it be to run some piping under the cap stones?

It looks to me like you have 6 to 8 inches clearance above the water line. If you could run a line to left of the skimmer (?) towards the tree thats just under the capping and then bring it forwards such that its flush with the inside facing, you clould likely create a curtain of falling water. Its length and volume limited only by the pump supplying it. If you added a valve to the line thats accessable near the skimmer you could control the water flow as well from heavy to nil.

Upside is some additional water flow in an area that might not have alot, some astetics, sound and aeration that you can turn on and off. Downside is some more work :) I don't see the need, but I think its possible.

Personally I love my waterfalls. Not for what they add to the pond but because they are a source of constant fiddling. Pretty much every weekend during the summer I spend atleast one morning and one pot of coffee trying to get it just "perfect". Of coarse it never is "just perfect" and one could argue whether thats by design or happenstance ( i think its both ) allowing for more "fiddling" the next week. It might be nothing more than replacing "one" stone to redirect the water, or tearing it down and giving it a entirely new "look". It might cascade over rocks one week, and the next spill over in a single sheet.

Here's a few quick shots of the koi in the pond. I still need to lower the number a little more. I think I'm at about 15 or 16 koi in the pond now.

Oh I love that showa!!!!(1st pic) BAM, that one is an eye opener. Ochiba looks right at home.

Thanks for taking the time Tom... water looks great :-)

I really love that Ochiba, I hadn't really paid much attention to that type of koi until very recently but I see why folks like them so much.

Yeah Terri, that showa caught me eye as well. Its good to see the wife still has sway over the butterfly in the pond :D

Yes, we tell have a longfin in the pond. *:|

My wife has been telling me she want two other koi that are in our selling tanks. One is this ochiba and the other is this shiro. Right now I don't have a good shiro so this one might go into the pond for now. I told her the ochiba can stay, but one has to go. Will see what happens with that.
