View Full Version : Does Spawning always bring fry and if, not, why not ???
My koi have been spawning for the last three weeks and so far I have not seen any eggs or fry. I assumed when they spawned we would automatically have fry in about five days. Why is this not happening ? Is anyone experiencing this in their pond ? I would appreciate any feed-back on this subject. Thanks. Barb

Barb I am not seeing any fry either, but experience tells me they are there. They are very small, quarter inch or so and hide in the algae on the sunny side of the pond, or that is where I always see them first. They should show up in a couple of days. Remember if they show themselves at this stage the other fish will eat them.
Jackie, thanks for that info...i am patiently waiting and watching every day as it has been five years or more since I have seen any fry in my pond. I lost my mama fish last year and I notice that my papa fish is now interested in a new (I suppose female koi)...most of the time it looks like they all are involved in the spawn and I have read that this happens but they have been spawning off and on for about three weeks and so far nothing. I appreciate your input..thanks again.

Barb has the female released her eggs yet? They get quite slim after spawning. It could be the boys are ready but the girl is not. I still have one female left to spawn although there was foam in the skimmer there were no eggs seen.
You know what Jackie ? Maybe that is the answer. Maybe what I am seeing is just the sperm from the male and the female has not released her eggs yet. She is still quite round and hasn't slimmed down. There is a lot of foam and action but I looked around today and I don't see anything that looks like an egg. Right now, I believe I have only one female that looks like she has eggs.
I don't have a camera to take shots of the pond but when my kids come around I will get them to do that for me and download them for all to see. We have enlarged our pond and are planting a garden around it.

Barb, this link http://backyardpuddle.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1198 will show you eggs from GG's spawn. One hopes you don't have this mess but for my guys they seem to get in the mood long before the females. You will know she is ready when she starts bumping the boys.

The parent koi can eat all the eggs and the emerging fry. Some ponds wont get any babies.

I pray for no babies. I still have half of last year's batch to get rid of.
