I've not had a lot of luck with my small container water gardens and was looking for some tips on what works. Do you have a pump? Did you add dirt or just water, are the plants in pots within the pot. Seems I've tried just about everything but....

Last year I had several container wg's, they all did very well. Cat tails, iris, grasses, creeping jenny, etc were all in pots with soil - sorta stacked (little pots sat on big pots), floaters used were slavnia and hyacinth. I exchanged half the water once or twice a week with pond waste water. No pumps, no air. They also only got either morning or evening sun... too hot mid-day - water would get too warm for the plants. This year no container wg's, no time - but do have a very small bit of liner sunk into one garden which has a water lily, G. Cattail, blue iris, and fairy moss.... lily is producing blooms, iris is almost done blooming.

What soil did you use or did you just pot them in gravel. All my plants are sitting in buckets of water looking most unattractive.

Honestly Jackie, the containers were each different - some plants were potted in plain old dirt (sandy soil mix from the yard) - some like iris just stuck in a pot bare root to stay upright... I didn't put much thought into the container wg's  just pulled stuff out of the ditch and plunked them in.
