View Full Version : Doing a filter upgrade...

I'm tired of cleaning brushes, floor maintenace pads and scrubbies and being covered from head to toe with fish poo.. so I'm doing an upgrade.

So far I've purchased a box of Springflo plus I have embossed box strapping and I'm going to mix them.

I'm ordering 7 cu ft of Bioflow 9 which is similar to Kaldness.

Purchased two Medo 50L Airpumps and Screen and pump for DIY microscreen.

Plus a 2nd Submersible Pump which I "might" make a small trickle tower and make over the top of chamber #3.

The 6000 G main pond is connected to a bottom pond (approx. 1500G goldie pond) by Two DIY skimmers which are gravity fed into a stream then flows into the lower pond.

The lower pond has a Skimmer and small filtration box for mechanical filtration, then goes to a Sequence 5800 pump which goes up to each of the 100 G stocktanks.

There is a ball valve next to each stocktank.
2" PVC with a ball valve is ran from the second stoctkank to the left side of the pond which goes to a very small waterfall.

2 DIY bottom drains from the main pond go into chamber #1.
In the chambers there are currently three 4 inch PVC pipes to tie each one together. (We put so many in because we weren't for sure about flow and thought extras could be capped off if needed.)

From the concrete chambers, there's a 3600 Sequence Pump and UV light after the bay.

From there the flow goes into each stocktank (waterfall) and goes back into the main pond.

Now here's what I have in mind:

Chamber # 1 (146 gallons) --DIY Microscreen

#2(125G) DIY Eazy.... Static

#3 (125G)Moving Bed

#4 and #5 two 100G Stocktanks - additional bio filled with strapping.
(do you think I need to add continuous air to them)

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Bonnie

Here's a pix of my filtration bay and a rough diagram of my existing pond layout.

I'd do an eazy in the first chamber and not bother with a microscreen ( I would add it later if needed), the eazy should do the trick for filtering the solids ...even the fines.
have you gone to Marice's messageboard and seen the video of him cleaning his eazys? I asked him to show us his as he was the inventor.

Luke can you post Maurice's link here please.

Ditto..

Did he make one in a 55 gallon drum or what?

I'm interested in seeing it...

Thanks

Bonnie, while I know the benefits of microscreen filters, no experience with DIY and how effective they are.... Luke's suggestion of static media in the 1st chamber would work quite well but you should incorporate air for cleaning.

Pretty cool Bon! Did you or the hubby do the forms for the bay? Was it hard?

I'm thinking of following Greg's CD for different chambers with a deck over it..same as on his CD..something to that effect anyway but I like the idea of concrete too.

Speaking of K1...first year I've tried it and I like it..does grab those fines and with a little swoosh, good as new

Pretty neat video from Maurice.

Last week I got in two Medo 50L airpumps so now I'm waiting on the media!

Busy, DH is a foreman and builds bridges for a living, so things like that are nothing for him. All the materials were FREE also which was great. Occasionally the "junk" that he brings home comes in very handy! :-)

My deck filter is nice. I think a change that I would make to is is to have the filter chamber deeper or graduated so that the pumps would draw from DIY Easys. Let me know if you want me to make you a drawing.
